Thomas Saunders has written a remarkable book entitled ‘The
Boiled Frog Syndrome’. It sets out the unsustainable effects of
our recklessly adopting untested high tech answers to our built environment.
He pays high regard to the wisdom of the past that utilised equally effective
but much less harmful solutions to architecture and design.
The book is well structured and organised into two parts. The first is
an introduction to a diverse range of natural and artificial phenomena
and the effect that each has on humanity. The second investigates how
societies in the past understood and co-operated with natural energies.
Of particular interest to RILKO members is his explanation of the mystical
language of numbers and divine harmony. The book successfully links the
lost knowledge of the past with the present.
The book heightens our understanding of how the design of any building
can provide us with a harmonious healthy and satisfying environment. It
includes guidance on practical solutions to prudently avoiding some of
our current health hazards.
An immensely readable and compelling book that I highly recommend to our
members. It sets the scene for the emergency of a new ecology based on
classical principles. Principles which are as relevant today as they were
in the past.
Thomas, a long-standing member of RILKO, makes a powerful and intriguing
case for change.
